Common Core in Action: Reviving the Civic Mission of Schools

16 Nov 2013 1:03 PM | Dr. Margaret Hill (Administrator)

Often ignored in school reform is the importance of the civic mission of schools -- schools' role in preparing students to be active and engaged citizens in their communities and the world. But the Common Core could change that. While the standards focus on English Language Arts and mathematics, the Albert Shanker Institute and the American Federation of Teachers have highlighted how the Common Core could reinvigorate the civic mission of schools. This Edutopia blog post http://www.edutopia.org/blog/common-core-in-action-civic-mission-schools-anne-obrien by Anne O'Brien provides some terrific ideas for making the Common Core - Civic Mission of Schools connection. This post also links to further resources useful for making these classroom connections in varying social studies fields.
